Dry Chain Lube...what is in it? home-brew possible?
A couple of Forumites have shared their home-brew recipes for "wet" chainlube. I've found that they work very well. It got me wondering what is in the commercial "dry" lubes and is their a home-brew replacement via accessible ingredients.

The only one I can think of is paraffin disolved in naptha. It takes a lot of naptha to completely dissolve a 1/4 pound block paraffin - maybe 24 ounces. The solution is temperature sensitive. A 20 ounce mixture might be completely clear in color at 75-80 degrees, but milky below that.
I've mixed some, but not tried it yet. Some would say to add at least a small amount of high quality oil, like synthetic motor oil or gear lube. To make a small batch, only use about 1 ounce of paraffin to start. |

I had a bottle of Squirt that had gotten thick.. asked them what to thin it with.. and they said water.
Being more curious, I looked up the MSDS - http://squirtlube.com.dedi603.jnb1.h...heet-20163.pdf Mostly it seems to contain "slack wax" - which appears to be a parafin precursor.. and I suppose you could take it from there, internet-wise. |
