Just riding along...this will buff out, right?

Got this Shimano C35 carbon wheelset as part of my recent '11 Psychlo X purchase.

Sold the wheels to another PLer, and in preparing to pack them up, noticed an issue. I've let him know of the issue and will issue a full refund...

I bought the bike on eBay, received and unpacked it last week and rode it five miles in the woods. It's *possible* that the crack happened in those five miles. I suspect that it was there before and the eBay seller just didn't notice it...

Anybody have a spare C35 carbon rim, rear, 20 spoke?

That part of the wheel does feel a bit like a fairing, specifically in how it connects (or not) with the spokes and valve.

The braking track is indeed aluminum.

I have not been able to confirm through searching whether the fairing is structural.

Considering the nipple sits in the carbon bit and not in the aluminum rim bed, it very much IS structural and NOT safe to ride.

Shimano's "C-" series rim's are a composite structure.

The aluminum "rim" part includes no attachment to the spokes other than through what is being called a "fairing".

It is extremely common to find used bikes being sold having a (usually rear) cracked rim. Typically such defects release some spoke tension local to the defect, which means that someone has since re-tensioned one or more affected spoke locations, and thus is well aware of the rim defect (but which is seldom disclosed unless visibly obvious).

At the lower end of the price range, a used bike in need of a new rear wheel may be worth roughly no more than the rear wheel that it's in need of.
