New driveshaft system by Ceramicspeed called DriveEN

Apparently came out at Eurobike and has pretty big claimed efficiency gains over traditional chain and der. setups. Looks interesting.

Here's one youtube link, there are others.

Cool but seems like it would be challenging to retrofit to an existing frame.

Any chance one of the big three would buy the company or license the technology?

You would have to convince me that it is more efficient than the simple chain drive system. It MAY be move efficient than a hub with internal gears.
