Years ago when I had some mechanicals that left me unable to ride, since the lbs was not open and I’m so picky about what I ride anyway and a good chance the LBS didn’t have what I needed anyway. I started hoarding parts. My main road bike is Red eTap 11 speed and I have 4 back up cassettes and an entire eTap group just in case, tires, chains, wheelsets and latex tubes for at least 2 years. I do the same for my other bikes as well. Since I have started doing this and do all my own wrenching, live and die by the torque wrench. I have not had a single mechanical since starting this practice. I have had flats.

Anyone else like me?

It's all relative, you think you are hoarder...until you meet someone else with a worse condition, you will feel a lot better

I have three bikes with Shimano 11 speed mechanical drive trains, so I have spare 11-34 cassettes and chains, a pair of shifters and a rear derailleur. I picked up the cassettes during Covid and maybe went a bit overboard when Shimano went to 12 speed.I also have SRAM XX1 on my MTB and bought an entire spare drivetrain (shifter, cassette, derailleur) for 1/3 retail from a PLer that came off a demo bike. I've been amazed that I'm still on the original drivetrain on this ten year old bike, only have changed a chain and the aluminum large cog on the cassette. Waxed chains are in the drawer for all four 11 speed bikes, but I have over 7,000 miles on the Bingham chain with hardly any wear. So I think my hoarding may be more than necessary!

Hoarding at least allows picking up stuff during significant sales, or barely used stuff from folks upgrading. All the stuff I mentioned together represents less than $1,000 spent.

After a certain point it becomes not - can you build a bike from your spare parts hoard ? Instead, how many bikes can you build from your spare parts hoard ?

Yes I do have a problem with Campy 10 speed stuff. But you actually sound pretty rational and organized. It sounds like all your "spares" fit in a single plastic storage container. I don't mean to enable, but you're doing pretty good!

I'd say that you're light on spares, because if the right frame or 2, or 10 pops up for sale, you'll be scrambling...

I usually buy a complete bike and start taking parts off. That way, any parts that I need is on that bike.

Takes a lot to feed 30+ bikes, or so I tell myself. LOL!
