Dramatic crash at Milan - San Remo (spoiler)

Just catching up on this race today and saw the unfortunate crash of Cavendish. I'm not sure I've someone completely flip like he did. I hope he's going to be okay.

That's a pretty safe bet. I think he's at the point where his mind is stronger than his body. He wants to win, but his body can't do the things he used to, and his competitiveness puts him in bad situations like that.

Hard to believe that 'road furniture' wasn't better marked... maybe a flagman behind it... ?

Not at this rate!

The guy has to be questioning his longevity.

I saw someone make the comment elsewhere that maybe that Cav's problem is that he's had so many crashes over the years that the combined effects have lowered his situational awareness and his reflexes. I'm not sure how many concussions he's had in his career but he did suffer one just last month.

Cav seems to be getting reacquainted with the pavement quite a bit as of late. If you look closely, you'll see the impact with barrier took off his shoe. Lucky he didn't break his ankle, among other things.

Lots of years left??? well for a cat 5 ride hell yeah, like 30 more years to be able to get to cat3 tops...

But everything must be seeing in its own perspective, CAV has been beyond cat1 for a very long time, and he started racing when he was like 12 y/o, chronologically speaking he is not that old yet but in cycling he has been around for 20 years already, add all the accidents he is been involved in for the last 10 years and you have a rider which body starts to notice the accidents.

He had teams built around him which were specialized to get him off the incidents (at front), now pretty much he is on his own and looks like his awereness is getting tad slow, thats just age. The other thing is that sprinters dont last too long like a roleur does. That's why sprinters come an go really quick, at the opposite, a good domestique can be over 40 y/o w/o any problem...

I do not see cav going for more than this year, maybe next one and that's it.

Absolutely inexcusable. He ought to sue the race organizers. He should, his team should, the riders' organization should -- and their insurers should enforce stringent pre-race course inspections.

What about a mop bucket at the top of the key, in an NBA game? What about a lawnmower on the 40 yard line? You couldn't get away with that in any other sport. Admittedly, bike racing isn't conducted on a court or field, but on public rights-of-way -- but that's no excuse. It should be part of the organizers' job to eliminate obvious hazards like that. It should be part of their job, and if they don't do it, there should be hell to pay.

There's widespread consistency to the way safety is handled in industry, in public spaces and commercial buildings, and so forth, and to see the back turned to safety in an instance like this is infuriating.

And his age doesn't enter into it. Would it be okay for a deathtrap like this to be put in the path of a 20-year-old?

Okay, taking a deep breath now. But really -- inexcusable.

You assume that it wasn't inspected. What if it was and that area was safer than is is in day to day.
