SRAM Mullet: 1x Wide Crankset Required?

Trying to buy components for a new build and wondering with a non-transmission SRAM mullet build if a SRAM Road Wide 1x Crankset is needed for a 42T Chainring. It seems that if you don't use the wide road cranks then the chain-line does not match the Eagle RD. Does anyone have experience using non wide crankset for their Mullet build?

Potential setup: Eagle RD (XX1 or X01) + 10-50 Cassette + SRAM Road (Force or Red) 1x 42T Crankset

No. I use a regular force crank with a 44t 1x. I use an Eagle X01 AXS rear derailleur, and either a 50-10 or 52-10 cassette.

I prefer the chainline with a non-wide crank--I'd rather have more drivetrain efficiency when I'm climbing.

This is the answer. Either chain line/crank works, just depends where you want the chain to be straightest - big cogs or middle cogs. A flatlander might want the wide; a mountain goat might want the normal road.

I use a standard SRAM “road” 1x chainline - 45mm - with the mullet setup. We have a lot of steep climbs so this setup is optimal here. Works great. The AXS mullet setup was a thing before SRAM sold “dub wide” cranksets as I recall.

It was, I built mine in November of '21 and used a White Industries GR30 crankset w/ a 0-offset chainring. It works really well!

Just finished a build, Red normal spindle and wolftooth oval 40t, eagle axs 10-52, no issues.

I'm running a standard 1x Force mullet setup (X01 RD) on my Open Wide. If you're interested, I've got set of 170mm Force 1x DUB arms for sale. They're new takeoffs from the Open. I switched to 165mm.
