Another coffee question...

We've always had good quality coffee, either via a Rocket machine, french press, or drip, with good local beans.

For faster morning routine, my wife declared today that she wants a Keurig (barf)....

Do any of the re-usable keurig pods actually work well, and thus allow you to use good quality fresh ground coffee?? Any other tips (other than don't get one....)?

Thx!

No self-respecting Canadian can deny the environmental impact of coffee pods. Tell your wife pods are mediocre at best.

I use a re-usable pod at work. I can't say whether it provides better coffee than any other re-usable, but I prefer it over the packaged pods. But, admittedly, I'm not a picky coffee guy.

We use reusable pods at work as well. They are fine. More work than a regular drip setup, as far as I'm concerned. It might be faster in terms of brew time, but not in setup / cleanup.

You should just offer to make all the coffee - that's our arrangement in my household.

We use a Lelit at home when not doing pour over so I like coffee a little
bit. I tried to get good coffee with a reusable pod at the office for awhile, also tried a lot of different coffees. I could never get good results and I agree with the others who have said with clean up it’s not any faster than drip. The time savings with the pod is with the disposable versions.

I bought a refurbished Jura ENA 8 from Jura back in February for $1000. Couldn’t be happier with the quality and the ease of use. Put the Mochamaster in the closet and haven’t used it since. My mom told me last week that Costco has a new one online for $1300 right now.

For a situation like this, I would recommend Nespresso whether it be the Original line which is more "espresso like" in size or the newer Vertuo line which is more regular coffee size. I know people's feelings here about Nespresso but much better coffee than Keurig in my opinion. The aluminum pods are free to recycle through Nespresso supplied prepaid shipping bags where the grounds are composted and the aluminum recycled. The pods are now available both from Nespresso and others and in just about any grocery store so you can find something that meets your expectations. Is it the best coffee in the world, no but for quick, almost no effort or cleanup and decent quality it is hard to beat.

I agree on Nespresso > Keurig. My wife not so sure, and points out that Keurig pods are generally a lot cheaper.

I think a superauto like the Jura that was mentioned is much more than we want to spend. The machine mentioned retails for 2999 + tax in Canada.

We'll see, maybe I'll just buy a drip machine that has a timer, and prep it every evening to have coffee ready at 6am...

I've always -loved- the idea of the pd convenience, but the coffee just generally sucks.....

I love the aeropress as well and I use it mainly for when I travel to races. My wife has no time for it.....

what about an all-in-one that has a grinder incorporated? You still get the same "press a button and coffee comes out" instant gratification without the nasty burnt plastic flavor and environmental impact.

I do espresso, but, my girlfriend does Nuspresso, and, I can tolerate it for a little while. That said, I was just in HomeGoods yesterday shopping for towels (man, that store has great deals) and saw a Breville Nuspresso machine on the shelf with a foamer included (the foamer is way cool and costs over a hundred alone) all for $129. Great deal.

While expensive, but not near as expensive as a Jura - I can highly recommend Phlips Superautomatic machines. (Philips now owns Saeco) https://www.seattlecoffeegear.com/ph...presso-machine

Put in beans and water and I think the coffee is very good. Dump the used beans once the hopper is full, and pull and rinse the entire brew unit once per week. Descale every quarter or so, and that is about it. I love my machine.

That said, I would be interested if folks have ideas on easy to use machines that are better than Kuerig and not as expensive as the Phlips. I have a college kid who recognizes that my machine is much better than her Keurig. That said, I am not willing to invest in a machine for her as I don't think it will get the proper cleaning needed in her college apartment.
