Just another reminder to keep inspecting those bikes...

Finished up a ride yesterday with 3k feet worth of climbing in twenty-five miles and lots of long, fast descents. Got back to the van to load up the bike and noticed this. Can't believe I didn't feel it during the ride.

this is one of the benefits of riding a higher spoke count wheel.

was that front or rear?

Yeah, it was an Open Pro, rear wheel and there was still enough tension on the spoke that the rim was only slightly rubbing a brake pad (yep, benefit of high spoke count wheel). I can't go off on Mavic though, as the wheel set did have somewhere near 20K miles on it.

I imagine that could've ended a whole lot worse in the wrong scenario.

nah. this is a reasonably common failure mode, especially for lighter rims like the stans alpha 340. as long as there are plenty of spokes, a pull-out like that is likely to end just the way it did for the OP, a little brake rub and time for a rebuild.

That rim looks like it's in pretty good condition, how old is the wheel? How many miles on it? Glad you're safe! And yes, there are many parts on the bike that can fail with catastrophic results, we inspect out bikes regularly!

Any signs of cracking or bulges at other eyelets on the rim? Sometimes similar failure occurs it multiple locations on the rim.

Don't see any signs of cracking anywhere else on the rim. Also, the wheel was at least eight years old, with probably close to 20K miles on it.
