Mechanicals happen in threes?

Crazy! Within 24hrs I have had three mechanicals in three separate bikes!!

1) crosschaining on fancy bike - possibly expensive mistake

2) ortlieb panner strap getting tangled around rotor on commuter - easy fix - broken clasp on Pannier

3) pedal on tandem unthreads mid ride tonight with daughter. Walk home. Crankarm is trashed and pedal looks ok.

I guess that means that there is nothing more to go wrong?! What a weird coincidence!

What kind of cross-chainings was it? Did it hurt anything?

This is similar to my expectation of having a ride that costs me $500 each year. The likelihood is down a bit since I road ride more than mtb ride, but still possible.

Don't all things happen in 3's if you start and stop counting at the right time?

Sorry for your hassle cluster.

Always seems to happen for me that way. No mechanicals for years, then earlier this year I broke a seatpost, had a flat (with no spare in the bag), and had a tire blowout.....all within about 10 days.

Since then it's been smooth sailing. *knocks on wood*

You may be able to have that crank arm salvaged by using a Helicoil to repair the damaged threads. If you've got the chain length correct and there's nothing amiss with the derailleur alignment and adjustments, momentarily cross-chaining shouldn't do any harm, other than making some rude noises. Did anything actually fail as a result?

As for your conclusion, there's an old country saying among the folk from around Manassas to the effect that "Just because you're having a bad morning doesn't mean you aren't also going to have a bad afternoon."

It was likely a misadjusted derailleur. Not that crosschaining is advised, but it should work.

The derailleur hanger will need to be checked and the pulleys replaced in the derailleur. I might've bent the derailleur cage (though it is carbon, so I guess it doesn't bend). Anyways, might be on here soon looking for a used Record RD /

I hope that it is nothing more than some labour and some pulleys.

Frame got a solid scar from the chain/derailleur cage binding up against the chainstay. It was ugly.

... which has the corollary, "Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean that everyone isn't out to get you."
