Brood X is coming....

There was quite a discussion here about 17 years ago....any of our east coast friends have stories to share about the Great Eastern Brood?

Have we really been on the forum that long? (as I check my join date...)

No cicadas yet in the St Louis area...

Still waiting, although I've heard of a few small sightings.

Meanwhile, a local coffee roastery is having a bit of fun with it.

My wife's sister high school graduation happened during Brood X emerging 17 years ago. It was in Princeton, NJ and outside. Apparently, they were so loud that no could hear anyone on the PA. And everyone were dressed in their best with cicadas in their hair.

What was the one about 5 years ago? Brood W? Definitely weird. The first day or two I wondered what machinery work was going on off in the distance. Sounded like what you’d imagine a hovering alien spaceship.

The yard at our family cabin in Hocking Hills OH, looked like it had been thoroughly aerated. The noise was constant and quite surreal. So of course I had to go for a ride. My car was splattered with cicada's, so I figured I'd be the same. Oddly, I don't remember hitting too many of them. Good, because some of the downhills are 50-55 mph.

I have never noticed chicadas other than hearing them in the woods. Might have seen a few.

Something feels wrong about the timeline. I've lived in NYC for 21 years now, but I remember exactly where I was during the last cicada emergence...and it was a place I only started going after I'd joined the New York Cycle Club, which was in 2006.

So either I experienced a different brood emergence -- I've heard some reference to "Brood II" I think? -- which showed up around the tri-state area less than 17 years ago... or else my memory is totally corrupted.

But in any case: They're LOUD
