Tool question--Shimano bottom brackets
Trying to install a 9100 bottom bracket into a frame the other day...tool I have for Shimano Hollowtech ii outboard bbs is too big for this new one. Trying to research whats up, seems Shimano reduced the OD of the new bbs. Great. I can't seem to figure out what tool I need. Any help?

yea, a new DA BB should come with a plastic insert to convert your current tool, but there are now tools specifically made for that BB too.

Same sort of gig when shimano first went to Hollowtech..and also with first gen 7700 Octalink BBs. The tool to preload the LH crank arm(Hollowtech) and the 'plug' to be able to pull the Octalink crank arm w/o the self extractor..
These came with DA(maybe others) but got lost, never with OE bikes.

My LBS tossed me an extra they had when I went in with the same question. Marginal gains!

My lbs decided I should use the better BB and got me a Park tool. It's a really mangy blue, that's why Park trademarked a range of colors.

i somehow have like 5 of those plastic adapter things, even tho i doubt ive bought 5 da bbs in the time its taken to collect them
frustratingly, i went to pull what i thought was a 6800 bb off a bike and neither my socket cup tool nor the adapter fit it... so i pipe wrenched that biatch off. 6800 different size than 9000+?

I put 3 of those Shimano plastic rings in my toolbox drawer, and when I went to get one, they had reproduced to 5. |

The 9100/9000 and BB-R60 (6800, 5800, R8000, R7000) definitely use a different sized adapter.

The park tool BBT-29 worked for me. ~$20

After using the adapter on a few installs, I sprung for the abbey double sided tool. It just arrived and looks as good as all the other tools I have bought from them.
My high quality bike tool obsession is getting worse, but I'm pragmatic enough to only buy tools I'll actually use multiple times vs one offs. If anyone needs a park tool including the plastic adapter, drop me a line. 60% off reasonable on line price and they are yours. |
