What bike do you regret selling?

Or what bike will you hold on to for as long as possible?

I've gone through a few moves without cutting into my 3 bike quiver (hardtail, CX, road singlespeed). I'll admit some sentimental value in them despite industry standards moving on from QR disc for the CX and hardtail.

I regret selling my Santa Cruz stigmata 3. I thought I was only going to ride a mountain bike so decided to sell it, but shortly thereafter planned a summer trip (for two months) where there is zero mountain biking nearby. The bike I replaced it with is not as good for dirt and trails (excellent on road though!) so I’m getting yet another frameset to replace it…

1979 Trek 930. Sold it to someone as a frameset, with the understanding I'd have first rights of refusal should they ever wish to let go of it.
That piece of vintage steel fit so well, I'm still not sure why I let it go, but I do know it's not coming back.

Only the c40 the jpritchet recently passed on for cheap. And it wasn't a perfect fit when I sold it but would work now. Otherwise, I keep em. The ones that are gone are culls.

I kinda wish I had ALL my old bicycles at least as far back as my first road bike in 1974, a $138 Libertas with Simplex derailleurs and centerpull brakes.

These bikes were so practical and I'm sure they would be fun to ride today.

But if I had to pick one, it might be my 1984 Specialized Rockhopper. Suntour derailleurs with top mount thumb shifters, cantilever brakes, and 1.75" tires.

I had modified it with a flat bar and a Tioga T-Bone stem for a stretched out, lower road bike position. Today it would have made a great, practical, go-getter/beater bike. I sold it for a hundred bucks when I bought my Bridgestone MB-3.

I regret selling my Redline Conquest single speed. It has ideal for what I do today. Maybe something similar and fancier lies in my future.

Another dumb decision was to sell my first Look 585 and 585 Ultra frame sets. I thought they had run their course and I’d be on to the next thing. But I’ve rarely ridden much that betters them.

Subsequently I’ve been able to replace those with like frames and have thousands of happy miles on them. I’m sure today there are ‘better’ modern bikes but these check off most boxes and make me happy. So getting ride of my earlier models was a mistake. Thankfully I’ve been able to rectify that.

What is this selling of which you speak?

A Batavus CX bike from the 70s. Old school european cyclocross. I think it had a Nervar crank with chainguards on each side of the single chainring, 5 speed freewheel, a single bar end shifter, Mafac cantilevers with the 1/2 hood levers. There wasn't anything exceptionally good or nice about the bike, but it was so unusual it was cool. Every CX bike I've ridden since then has been functionally better in every way except the coolness factor.

I sold a Lemond Poprad and regretted it enough to buy another one.

I kind of wish I could get my old Specialized S-Works Tricross back, but not enough to reach out to the person I sold it to, so I guess it must not be that high a priority.

The bike I'll hold on to as long as possible is my '87 Bianchi Campione d'Italia, but that's really only for sentimental reasons. It was my first good bike and unless I have to sell everything and live in a van down by the river, it's sticking around.

Nothing comes to mind.
If something does, it must not be that important.
Roll on.
