still riding? wearing a mask?

Question for those of us still riding.

Should I be wearing a mask?

I'm in a rural area. I see other riders and walkers on occasion but rarely and when I do I give a wide birth.

I'm not opposed to wearing a mask. I have a cute one my wife made that I'm sure does next to nothing but looks cool and I have N95 shop dust masks.

Neither of these seem like good options. The former is just going to blow off and the latter fogs-up my glasses and is dorky AF.

If you are riding and wearing a mask (and wear glasses) what are you wearing?

Any thoughts on a neck warmer that when I encounter other people on the road I pull up over my mouth and nose as a courtesy?

i don't wear a mask if i'm not around other people, when i am i give wide berth. it's the suspended exhalations i'm concerned about. anything that catches spit droplets (gaitor, buff, homemade mask etc. would prevent this sufficiently)

but this shouldn't be a consideration at all:

yes and yes

at least wear one when you might encounter someone. I'll wear a neck gaiter most of the time which I can easily pull up.

we just kind of hashed this out yesterday in the bigger thread, but short answer for me:

yes riding
no to wearing a mask.

there's zero chance of me wearing a mask when i'm outdoors walking, running or cycling.

I would wear a mask only when going indoors, with wind and moving air the benefit of wearing a mask is quite minimal

Thanks and thanks

I was going to try and weed through the big convo but felt like this would be more to the point.

and yeah the dorkyAF point is juvenile tbh I've been wearing a N95 and nitrile gloves to the grocery store well before it was common place so I'm okay with dorky - i guess i meant over-kill for riding. The thing that makes it a no-go for me is my eye-glasses get fogged-up.

respiratory signature (snot comet) - interesting article

in our county masks are mandatory in public except for exercising. also forbidden due to non-essential travel to drive to the start of rides. i obey that sometimes, sometimes not. riding with only one or two other people and keeping distancing constantly in mind.

Some places you’re required to wear a mask outside, and around here I see a lot of cyclists wearing them. I don’t think anyone is enforcing anything though, and if you live in America you’ll most likely get away with riding without a mask no problem. Parts of Europe are more strict.

Slightly OT, but here's a thought. The Animal Welfare Department is limiting animal intake during this time, possibly increasing the number of strays and potentially dangerous dogs on the streets. Where am I going with this?

My friend and team leader was rushed to the hospital yesterday after being taken down by a stray dog while riding. He has a broken hip and elbow, and underwent bicep reattachment surgery. Not a good time to be at the hospital.

For the record and a little qualification, I am aware of 2 of I think 3 national races he has won over his extensive and decorated racing and riding history. One road race, and the hill climb nats at Pikes Peak. And, he heads a nonprofit bike initiative. And while all that doesn't always correlate to safe riding, I can tell you first hand that his bike handling skills are superior. Safe to say if it can happen to him, it can happen to anyone.
