Marketplace DeRosa Find
Does anyone look at Vintage Steel Bikes in the FB Marketplace. I found a fine DeRosa steel in my size for $300. Seller will not accept PayPal. Only Venmo or Zelle. Free shipping. Sounds like a scam to me. Comments/suggestions?

Possibly. People have their reasons for not using PayPal. At that price it’s worth driving a coupe of hours for an in person look. If that’s not possible I’d take a pass. You can also try to find a local facilitator.

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Buyer is asking for a payment method with no means of refunding for a reason.

Shipping would cost at least $100. On what planet *would* this be legit?

NOW HE SAYS HE HAS A PAYPAL ACCOUNT. HE'S REALLY REELING MEIN NOW! I may post the ad so others can see it. It might save someone some pain. He has three other vintage pieces for sale. Those are more reasonably priced. 💁

I'm looking for a rim brake front/disc rear setup, specifically for suburban mall camping. Let me know if he has something particularly attractive...

Be very careful. If you must, Pay with PayPal Goods & Services and cover the fee in case of an issue. Ideally look for clues like poor English, quick replies with no niceties, and asking for PayPal Friends & Family. I fell for something like this and I feel really stupid about it. The lure is a good price, but not unreasonably so, and throwing in free shipping without knowing where you live.

Marketplace Scam
I’ve purchased a dozen + steel bikes from FB Marketplace / Craigslist. I try to be cautious and maybe have been a little lucky, but I always have a somewhat extensive email/text chain and usually a phone call. I nearly always ask for more photos or confirmation of measurements - both good ways to ferret out fraud.
If something seems fishy I just move on. Prices are all over. I’ve found some great bikes at $300 that someone simply wanted out of their garage. Often these have bad photos and the rear mech may be scratched up more than expected or something, but for the right price there’s little risk. |

I asked him if a friend could meet him in Houston, and he said yes, he live in Richmond Texas. Perhaps I will seek a facilitator. I will ask for a specific address in a public park.

Ask to meet in a town hall parking lot or, better, a police station parking lot. A few towns in the area have camera monitors parking areas in their parking lot (town hall for one, police dept for another) especially for buy/sell transactions. Gives peace of mind to both parties.

It’s Not a Scam
Here it is as delivered to my door. I think it is a De Rosa Professional. No serial number, but has the trademark on the BB she’ll. I think it is between 1985 and 1989. The tubing is SLX. I’ve wanted a red road bike for some time now, I didn’t think it would be a De Rosa.
Any input on the year or history?
