Merckx Team SC

A Merckx Team SC came across my feeds at a reasonable price. Any advice or tell tale signs a Scandium frame is past it's prime and close to the garbage heap?

And any feedback from those of you who do own or have owned a Team SC?

Thanks.

Check for a loose headset- these tend to have issues with loosening and if it was ridden loose for a long time you could have issues with headtube ovalizafion or a damaged steerer. Otherwise I’d look for cracks (headtube/welds etc) and oxidation/flaking paint.

If you’re using mechanical be sure the down tube adjusters are not locked up.
Check rear wheel alignment also , some are out a little.
I had 4 the best bikes ever.

These are notorious for corrosion issues. Check around the brake stops on the top tube, bottle cage rivets, etc. The paint will start bubbling and the area will eventually fail.

But as others have said, they were excellent riding bikes. One of the best of that era IMO.

I had a Team SC before and was convinced that the “loose headset” issue was due to the poor tolerance of the OG fork steerer, which couldn’t hold a compression plug. Replaced with an Enve fork and no issues since. Much better ride as well.
