Interesting watch.. I had a hard time coming up with a solution. People can be so disappointing.

Anyone who tries to sabotage a bike race OR lights anything that produces smoke, should be clubbed by Bernard Hinault.

My asthma is badly triggered by smoke. Seeing people making smoke on purpose at bike races enrages me.

Yeah, just riding through all those nuts would drive me nuts!

And the deliberate acts are so much more heinous that the stupid accidents.

Here where I live the LOTAJA has an unfortunate history of sabotage too. Any one caught doing that should be beaten to a pulp in my book. There is just no excuse.

I've seen the TDF many, many years ago and the experience was just so crazy exciting and I can understand someone getting fired up and doing something accidental and stupid. I guess it comes with the territory a bit as there's just no way to close off the whole route. Yet still, you just need to keep your head and show respect to the riders and their safety.

I get that as I have the same problem. We have open burn seasons where I live a few months out of the year and sometimes I have to just hold my breath and ride through the smoke to keep from jacking the lungs up. I'd hate to experience that as I was maxing out at the top of Ventoux or the like. Gotta feel for those guys.

The only Grand Tour stage I've watched in person is Stage 1 of the 2007 Giro on LaMaddelena, Sardinia. It was a team time trial and before the first team was on the course, the Carabinieri had vehicles on the road announcing that spectators had to stay off the roadway. Between teams, there were Carabinieri on motorcycles warning spectators again.

Our base had Carabinieri guarding the main walk-in gate so we got the dirt on spectator behavior. Overall the locals were well behaved, but don't get them started on German tourists.
