OT: April 1

Today is the 39th anniversary of one of the greatest April Fool's pranks in my lifetime, The Curious Case of Sidd Finch in Sports Illustrated, by the great George Plimpton. (Sorry for the spoiler.)

And 28 years ago, this gem appeared in several U.S. newspapers:

RIP Cycling sense of humor . . .

So far today I've found nothing that even remotely looks like an April Fools fun story on any of the major bike sites.

So I guess I'll just revisit this classic and have a rueful chuckle.

Yes, the cycling web sites today are full of normal mundane stories like these:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BREAKING NEWS: EBikes Permitted to Join 2024 Tour de France

Paris, France - In an unprecedented move that is sure to shake up the world of professional cycling, the organizers of the Tour de France have announced today that electric bicycles (ebikes) will be allowed to participate in the prestigious race alongside traditional cyclists in the 2024 edition of the event.

This decision marks a significant departure from tradition, as the Tour de France has long been known as the ultimate test of human endurance and athletic prowess. However, in a statement released by the organizing committee, they cited a desire to embrace innovation and inclusivity in the sport as the driving factors behind the decision to welcome ebikes into the race.

"We believe that allowing ebikes to compete in the Tour de France will open up new opportunities for athletes of all abilities to experience the thrill of participating in this iconic event," said Jean-Pierre Dubois, President of the Tour de France organizing committee. "Cycling is evolving, and we want the Tour de France to evolve with it."

Under the new rules, ebike riders will compete in a separate category from traditional cyclists, with their own set of regulations and guidelines tailored to ensure fair competition. The use of ebikes will be strictly regulated to prevent any unfair advantages, and riders will be subject to rigorous testing to ensure compliance with doping regulations.

"We are committed to maintaining the integrity and spirit of the Tour de France while also embracing new technologies and modes of transportation," added Dubois. "We believe that allowing ebikes to participate in the race will add an exciting new dimension to the event and inspire cyclists of all levels to push their limits and chase their dreams."

The announcement has already sparked a flurry of excitement and speculation within the cycling community, with many eagerly anticipating the prospect of seeing ebikes compete alongside their human-powered counterparts on the grueling roads of France.

While some purists may balk at the idea of ebikes joining the ranks of the Tour de France, organizers are confident that this bold move will ultimately serve to elevate the sport and attract a wider audience to the world of professional cycling.

I don't know that the beef stew gel is intended to be a joke. They are actually selling the stuff. During the RVV coverage the Eurosport commentators were talking about the samples they'd received.

The one where Sheldon completely disassembled a chain is a classic, if only for the picture. Talk about committing to a joke.

It's really difficult to come up with a good april fool's joke. Some people should just skip a year. And by "some people," I mean everyone.

Pan-Mass Challenge Finish Line Moves to Edgartown!

And for those of us in New England...

Subject: Pan-Mass Challenge Finish Line Moves to Edgartown!

Dear PMC Community,

I hope this message finds you all in good spirits and gearing up for another incredible Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) season. As we prepare to embark on this year's journey, I'm thrilled to share some exciting news that's sure to ignite your enthusiasm even further.

Drumroll, please... We're thrilled to announce that the finish line for this year's PMC has been relocated to the beautiful town of Edgartown!

That's right, after careful consideration and collaboration with local authorities, we've made the decision to move the finish line to the picturesque shores of Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard. This scenic location promises to add an extra layer of magic and excitement to the conclusion of our ride, providing a stunning backdrop for your triumphant finish.

We understand that change can sometimes be met with mixed emotions, but rest assured, this decision was made with careful thought and consideration for the safety, enjoyment, and overall experience of our riders and supporters. Edgartown offers ample space, amenities, and charm to ensure that our PMC finish line remains a memorable and rewarding destination for all.

So, what can you expect from this new and improved finish line experience? Picture yourself crossing the finish line against the backdrop of Edgartown's quaint streets, bustling harbor, and stunning coastal views. After completing your epic ride, you'll be greeted with cheers, applause, and the warm embrace of fellow participants, volunteers, and supporters. It's a moment of triumph, celebration, and camaraderie that you'll cherish for years to come.

Of course, our commitment to the PMC mission remains as steadfast as ever. By participating in this year's ride and crossing the finish line in Edgartown, you're not only achieving a personal milestone but also making a meaningful impact in the fight against cancer. Your dedication, passion, and fundraising efforts are instrumental in advancing critical cancer research and patient care initiatives at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

As we gear up for another unforgettable PMC adventure, I encourage you to embrace this exciting change and let it fuel your motivation and excitement for the journey ahead. Together, let's pedal with purpose, celebrate our achievements, and make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.

Thank you for your unwavering support, enthusiasm, and dedication to the PMC cause. We can't wait to see you at the finish line in Edgartown!

Pedal on,

Starry Bill
