I met Bill while we were both doing the El Tour De Tucson ride in 2011, and his custom titanium Holland bike was enormous! The headtube looked like a Louisville Slugger!!!

But I was living in Boston during his Celtic tenure, and I'll always fondly remember that season he won Sixth Man Of The Year.

An indication of Bill's fame and influence... my wife told me of his death today.

She's about as far from a sports fan as you can get.

I worked at International Bicycle Center in Boston during college. He brought in his 70cm Merckx road bikes (one red & white, one blue & white) for maintenance. Being 6’6”, I was the default test rider but it was still a stretch! Probably 88cm saddle height.

Super nice guy and always positive. Hope he liked how the Merckx felt when he picked it up.

F**k indeed. The comments about him as a Celtic are interesting, since to me he was a Bruin first and foremost, back in the days when UCLA losing a game, let alone not winning the NCAAs, was news. I couldn't stand listening to him as a broadcaster but I admired his sticking with his unique POV, as well as overcoming his stutter.

His Holland was, indeed, gigantic. The last year of the Tour of California I rode up Mt. Baldy Road to see the racers and at one point I turned and saw him standing next to me with his bike. It was startling.

I second that ESPN 30 for 30. It's kind of heartbreaking how much difficulty he had to overcome, but heartwarming that he did so with such joie de vivre.

I met him years ago at a Challenged Athletes Foundation weekend ride. Even when he was riding uphill into the wind he still had a smile on his face. Pretty nice guy in my tiny sample size.

I met Bill Walton at the San Diego Custom show in 2009, and he was a real gentleman. Friendly and gracious, we talked about cycling and how much he loved it. I've since read his book where he wrote the same.
