Pro cyclist Tara Gins banned from team after Playboy shoot

Quote:
A Belgian cyclist claims she’s been banned from joining the men’s team after posing for a sexy Playboy shoot.

“Those were photos I wouldn’t hurt anyone with,” Tara Gins, 30, told Cycling News of the shoot, which involved posing for the American nudie mag and appearing in a topless calendar for a Belgian firm last year. She also frequently shares saucy snaps to her nearly 30,000 followers on Instagram.

I also note that this is the NY Post which is not the most credible source of news, so who knows how accurate the story is. The more troubling part is the allegations of harassment while she was on the Health Mate team. But those allegations don’t appear to have anything to do with the revocation of her job offer. I have no doubt that women in and working around professional cycling can be subject to sexual harassment.

As far as the nudity goes, who gives a ****. I have several issues of ESPNs “The Body.” None of the athletes have any clothes. Is that pornographic?

playboy isnt porn. you could maybe call it erotic photography, but theres nothing overtly sexual about it or nude photography in general

seems kinda ridiculous

Not arguing the relative merits (or nonexistence of) of the case or story, but to say that there's nothing sexual about nude photography? That seems a bit of a stretch.

So in a sport where I stare directly at someone's annus - who are wearing bibs that hug so tight I can tell if they have had a circumcision - that sport is concerned about someone posing in playboy.

Got it.

Why no calls to run these people out of the sport?

Clearly a double standard.

nudity is only sexual if you make it sexual. have you ever been to a nude beach? seen nude photography/art in gallery? have you seen children running around nude? theres absolutely nothing sexual about those things, unless you sexualize them - which would be, i say, deviant from norm.

different cultures and sub cultures have different levels of modesty and sexualize things ... many islamic cultures sexualize the female form in ALL forms - simply wearing "regular" clothes, let alone no clothes, is sexualized. in the west as a whole, the human form is much less sexualized.

and its a dangerous thing, i think, to attach sexuality to states of dress. this is where we get notions like "she was asking for it" when a woman is sexually harassed or assaulted while wearing whatever the perpetrator claims is provocative clothing - whether thats totally covered up and showing only face, ankles, or a miniskirt, or a bikini, or nothing at all.

ill also point out that wearing clothes is unnatural and pretty much unique to our species.

nay, friend... nudity is not sexual, unless its presented in a sexual way or the viewer sexualizes it
