Another Serotta "what's this worth?" thread
A friend has an early 90's Serotta steel bike from the Brueggers Womens Race Team. I'm getting more info from him - he thinks it's a 51.
Ballpark range of value? Thanks

Just speculation from looking at the picture alone, but it may also be a custom geometry as the TT looks short.

I've asked him to measure it up, look at tire clearance, and generate a component list

I had somebody ask me if I was interested in this yesterday! It appears to have a 53/39 and a small cassette with limited clearance. I think it's a cool bike, but nothing on it is worth very much. I couldn't tell from the picture whether this is lugged or tig welded either. It's probably worth a few hundred bucks IMHO, but maybe a little more to somebody who has some nostalgia for it.

So reading the above negatives, sounds like only if this early 90s bike was built for disc brakes, wide tires, and came with a compact crankset and wide range rear cassette, it might then be worth something.

Low tire clearance, gear ratios that are no longer used and older Shimano group just don't have much value. It's still a cool bike and worth something to somebody, but not a whole lot. Plenty of rim brake bikes that do hold some value, but not too many that are pushing over 30 years old.

Ha. I get the intent of your post, but you need to spend some time looking at older bikes and the market. The parts on that bike are likely a liability. Frameset is worth maybe 5-6 w/o them. Complete bike no more than that.

a liability as in a danger or bringing the value of the bike down? I can't see the first, maybe the second, depending on the buyer..

The best use for these bikes in today's era is as commuters.
That's honestly the best way to make sure they get a lot of use moving forward. Theres just very limited market for them unless someone is looking for that exact fit. |

No surprises, thanks all. My friend isn't greedy in the slightest, I asked on his behalf just in case there was something about the Bruegger team association that was significant.

Killer paint though! Fade with the pink decals! I mean, come on.

You, I'm amazed anyone even bothers to ride bicycles that are more than 10 years old. Can they even go more than 5 mph? Such junk.

In terms of a sale. I'm sure they are functionally fine, but I suspect that the bike would attract more interest as a frameset.
