Reminiscing about catalogs

While trying to make the decision between whether to make some tea or a drink this evening (tea won), it dawned upon me how excited I used to be when I'd get new catalogs. For me, it was always Nashbar, Colorado Cyclist and Excel Sports. I didn't know about Supergo at the time, but it also would have made the list.

What catalogs do you remember fondly?

Colorado Cyclist, Excel, Performance, Nashbar and the old huge Velonews magazines. Those had great ads from places like R&A, Ten Speed Drive, Flanders Bros and others. VeloNews back in the day had great ads.

Colorado Cyclist and Excel Sports were top shelf. I seem to recall another, maybe Frankford Bike?

Also liked World Cycling Productions. Browsing thru VHS videos and cycling accessories.

I think closeout places like Performance, Nashbar, Supergo, PricePoint might have been hurt by the decline of the catalog. I would certainly flip through those and pick up a closeout or sale deal here and there. But I am not about to go to a website and sift thru page after page looking for deals. It just isn't the same.

I think you were thinking about Branford Bike. I got boxes of tubes from PricePoint as there were shutting down and now I ride tubeless.

I think Supergo was Bikeology first. I will second the Velonews, I mentioned in a previous post about the awesome Italia Velosport ads in VN.

It was always great to get a new catalog in the mail. I have catalogs from all the sellers mentioned so far, and others. Most of them are gone now but Schwab Cycles used to send out print catalogs and is still in business.

Couldn't begin to estimate how many hours I spent with a JC Whitney or the parallel Warshawsky and Company catalogs when I was in high school. I always wondered about the marketing angles about the two brands as the catalogs were virtually identical. JC W still exists, their warehouse is about 35 miles from me.

I remember getting Bikeology in the mid-70s, my first introduction to high end components and parts when I was an early teen. Spent many hours pouring over catalogs and creating my dream builds (which were always exclusively Campy - a brand loyalty that still exists for me some 45 years later!). Grew up about 45 minutes from Branford Bike (when it was in CT), and I used to take day trips down there when I got my drivers license to ogle his stock.

There was a great catalog from a shop down in Florida (I think) that featured hard to source Italian gear (Moser frames and lots of great clothing), but I can’t remember the name! Anyone?

Last winter I rediscovered a stash that I thought had been thrown away years ago. Needless to say, the entire world was put on pause for a few hours…

Museum worthy. I hope they are preserved or at least a high quality digital capture.
