Plug'd tire - to patch or not to patch; a poll

Got a puncture on a gravel tire this weekend, just barely big enough that sealant alone would not seal. Dynaplug racer to the rescue, which sealed the tire instantly.

Three days later and the tire is holding air just fine.

I'm inclined to just be lazy and leave well enough alone, it's sort of a hassle to remove the tire, remove the sealant, clean the inside of the tire and apply a patch.

Am I asking for trouble.

Doesn't the rubber in the plug sort of bond with the tire casing?

I flared on same tire twice within 2 weeks last year. Used a dynaplug each time and left it for remainder of season then was changing tires anyway.

I’ve never patched a plug and never had an issue.

4 slashes (~6mm) in as many years (not sealed by sealant alone), used dynaplugs (once a double plug), did not patch, just wore out the plugged tire. Tires at 55psi, Conti gp5kstr and MAVIC yksion 2.

I consider a plug a permanent repair. I leave enough of a tail to let it get worn in with the tire. After a few rides it's hard to tell where the plug is.

Small hassle.....
I patched a dry suit a while back with a tire patch and it has been bullet proof ever since.

Based on my experience, if it's a gravelking, patch it or trash it. If it's another tire, it's fine with just the plug.

Not a gravelking. It's a terravail tire, which has been dead reliable otherwise, and still has plenty of tread left.

I pulled the front Raddler off my gravel bike a month ago to clean it out (it had been sitting) and reinstall it. I was amazed at the number of thorns poking through the tread, probably two dozen or more. Nature's dynaplug. I carry a Dynaplug kit but have never used it, but I'd imagine if a tire could survive a few dozen thorns and still hold air, a plug would be no different. Run it to the casing.

On a side note, the idea of carrying spare tubes on a gravel bike seems doomed to failure, especially for me. I think if I had to put a tube in the tire to get home, I'd have to turn the tire inside out and saw it back and forth across a tree or pavement to break off all the pointy things.
