Brad Wiggins's Pinarello

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/brad...ma-f8-gallery/

3 things struck me;
Picture 4: bar tape all the way to the stem

Picture 8: 170 cranks, pretty short for his size.

Oh yeah, then there's the 14.5 stem.

Interesting running tape all that way but much easier without the shifting cables.
170 cranks are a real surprise, never thought of him as a spinner.
All those guys stems are longer than us mortals.

Bar wrap: Madison guys like their bars wrapped all the way to the stem. If you watch a sling, the hand on the bars is right next to the stem.

His E-tap climbing buttons might be covered by the bar tape as well.

His current track training could explain the short cranks as well.

People coming out of Sky and Team GB have been using short cranks for a while now - they've done a host of research, like legitimate sports science research, and concluded that shorter cranks are more efficient for a few reasons - one of which is affording a more aerodynamic position while still having a sufficiently open hip angle to produce power.

yeah, but generally speaking, track riders use shorter cranks on the track - but it's really the road use where Sky's research has led to a trend toward shorter cranks.

Here's some elaboration. In short - no power loss, better pedaling efficiency, and better aerodynamics: http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/...-better-188288

Sorry for the noob question, but what's with the "chain catcher"? Is that really an issue on a road bike?

He was using 177.5 cranks on the road a few years ago:
http://www.bikeradar.com/road/gear/a...-think2-39909/

Think he rode 177's when he won the Tour.

Same link says he's 6'3" and was on a 56cm frame.

That's 6'3" - and 152 pounds.

Interesting responses. I'm interested in that shorter crank research.

I've ridden the track some but have never dared trying a sling but can see how taping to the stem would be assuring.

I've always wrapped my bars to stem when I could. When I was in college bar tape was expensive and no one taught me how to wrap it so I assumed you were supposed to use the entire roll per side. I think it looks a lot cleaner, especially with eTap/no cables and I don't do madison slings, but often put my hands there while removing a wind vest, getting my phone out, etc.

As for his bike the short crank thing is interesting and people are conflating it with the whole hip angle/hip opening theory, but in reality it seems he just wants his road setup to have the same dimensions as his track setup.
