The main benefit I've found is adjustability. My frame's FD mount is in a weird place, and other catchers would always hit the chain. It also covers the chain on all three sides. The plastic hook ones don't cover the top of the chain, unless I'm thinking of a different style from the one you're referring to. In any case, it's definitely bike jewelry, but it works really damn well!
