The boys-Crosby, Nash, et. al.-discouraged her from going, telling her it was "no place for a girl" and encouraged her to do Dick Cavett. Then, after helicoptering in and out themselves they crashed the show, totally stealing all the attention with tales of what a happening it was. You can see the deflated look on Joni's face. youtube-able. Years later she remarked about having missed the defining event of her generation.

Worth noting also the contrast in the two versions of the song-hers is reflective, sparse, a bit melancholic or even elegaic. CSNY version is all raucous celebration.
