Its not that hard without the tool. There's a thread here on how to hack it with the correct bolt/nuts as a press. But if they've been in there for a while, its going to need some soaking in a good penetrating oil as they tend to seize on the outer race. Coolplanetbikes (posts in the Classifieds and on ebay) has the bearings.
I can't compare an ST to a standard as I've only had the ST, but in a stable of 5 bikes that are all ready to go, its the go to. Just something about it-it does track very well, is stiff enough but not so stiff as to beat you up.
