I'll second what wooly said. Imagine riding into a town you don't know at the end of the day in the rain (yep, it happens), trying to find the camping for that day (usually well marked) and then finding your one bag in a huge pile along with everyone else's. Then finding a place to set up your tent, unpack your stuff, ...

Having a smaller outfit with staked out campsites waiting makes a huge difference. Even better are the ones that set up a tent for you. Sure, it costs more but like I said: you get there, it's raining, ...

All depends on how much you want to rough it.
