Gear inches

I ride on the flat a bunch and I usually push something like a 65 to 70 inch gear ratio. Some call it the magic 70.

So 39 x 15 = 68.3 and 42 x 16 = 69.0

Everyone talks about top end and low end when discussing gear ratios. Those are the extremes. i tend to think around what do I usually ride.

If I had a 32 or 29 inner ring that would put me into this ring and cog combo:

29 x 11 = 69.3
32 x 12 = 70.1
34 x 13 = 68.7

That is some serious cross gearing. I suppose you can switch to the big ring. But that again is a cross chain situation. I am running 52 by 36, which is compact enough, otherwise it seems to be a cross chain situation on the flat.

Ok the big ring break down is as follows, maybe not that bad after all. i still tend to picj gearing that puts me inthe middle of cassette on the flat.

45 x 17 = 69.6
48 x 18 = 70.1
50 x 19 = 69.2
