Dang! How does the tip of your puller engage the bottom bracket spindle? Can you extend the center of the puller, hold it to the bottom bracket spindle, and see the engagement? If it cleanly presses against the square of the taper end, then I don't know.
If somebody really smanged those cranks onto the spindle, the aluminum is soft and deforms. Cranks subject to overtightening often will simply crack. The cranks should remain readily removable, that's what the tapers's for. That's why I'm wondering about the puller engagement.
