Good question. I personally don't feel that the sloping geometry makes that much difference in the way the bike rides. About the only time I notice this is when the top tube brushes against my leg and it hits in a different location.
The '96 has standard stock geometry which happens to work really well for me and the '04 was a custom (but not for me). They both ride very nicely and I enjoy being on them as much as I do my high carbons (Time VXR and Colnago C-50). If I had to choose between the two, it would be the '96. I'm not sure how to describe it, but I feel more connected when riding this bike than any other one I own. The fit is spot on and it handles superbly...it's a keeper.
