Not only are they not
clubs, they are not even independently owned franchises in the manner of NFL or MLB teams.
I don't begrudge MLS the success that it's had, and this is probably the only model that could grow professional soccer to anything close to this level in the U.S., but this has always stuck in my craw. No matter how many scarves they wave, or cringy "ultra" displays they engage in, fans just don't have anything resembling a tangible stake in the team.
