If you are sure that was due to impact with the bar end rather than some other part of the bar or bike, then I stand corrected. Still, mtb bars bars would appear almost designed to maximize the likelihood of impalement-type injuries. When the wheel turns violently one way or the other, it gets locked into place with the bars pointed straight back with the bar ends clear of other parts of the bars or bike. On drop bars, not only do the bars ends stand far less proud of the rest of the bar, but when the wheel turns, as is very likely in a crash, the bar end is turned away from the rider.
