I've traveled through NM and AZ and much of Rt 66 is now I-40 but there are abandoned sections that are no longer paved including one through Petrified National Forest. They're mostly a depression in the ground with telegraph poles alongside. I've driven several sections that would have been awful on a bike. I'm moving to Kingman, Rt 66 has a nice shoulder as far as I would want to ride.
But yeah, it tries to be artsy and edgy and comes up short.
