I believe a 44mm HT gives you several options with respect to headset choice and fork choice (You can go straight, 1.25" or 1.50" tapered, etc), a few grams be damned. I just believe it's the best way to go, given the choice. That's not to say a regular, 1.125 incher won't serve you well, of course. It will. BEAUTIFUL frame! BTW, can you give us a close-up of those welds? Say, the TT/ST junction?
