There are hangers with more drop and clearance for large headtubes, I've used both IRD and Tektro. Neither was ideal for my application so I went with a Ritchey CX headset (which appears to be no longer available, but I have an extra if it floats your boat). I ultimately ditched the Ritchey in favor of where you started (a stem with integrated hanger) since it's an S&S travel bike.
