The thing that controls release is that nub just under the area you point to. The areas you point to are what control cleat entry. All my cleats have been the rounded versions, I think. Maybe your old cleat is worn to where exit is easier.
To ease cleat release put a tiny amount of grease or wax on the nub of the cleat.
