wool base layer question
 

Who makes a long sleeve base layer comparable to the Defeet short sleeve wool base layer? I never got one when Defeet made them but sure wish I did. The SS wool is my favorite but a couple of long sleeve ones would be nice too.

I am partial to smartwool merino 250.

I have the LaPassione long sleeve and it's lovely. Nicer than the one I had previously. I sometimes also use silk hiking base layers when the conditions aren't as cold.

There's an absolute crap ton of merino base layer manufacturers out there. Wiggle's house brand: DHB seems to be very nice for the $$.

I'm kinda going back and forth between merino and Assos base layers this winter. Like em both, so it's hard to pick

I've had good luck with the ones available at Sierra Trading Post, they seem to be interchangeable in my experience..

I'm still wearing my sleeveless and long sleeved wool base layers I got from Rivendell years ago. They have held up well and do exactly what wool is supposed to do--keep you warm, even when wet. Are they still in business? I see they have a website, with both sleeveless and long sleeve tops. Different from what I bought, but I'm sure just as functional.

That said, this dry and relatively mild winter and flexible work schedule have allowed me to ride outside almost daily :banana: and experiment more than usual with base layers. Those Craft technical fabric ones hiding at the back of my drawer work pretty darn well, too... although have to say merino is still my favorite.

Yes - DHB Merino (comes in _150 and _200 weights) and Icebreaker Bodyzone 150 are both really nice.

Icebreaker and Smartwool are my typical merino baselayer garments.
They have been reasonably satisfactory over the years.

Overall quality for Smartwool has slipped with corporate acquisitions, though.
Keep your eyes open for the newer merino suppliers bursting onto the scene.

I bought one of these Flanders from Castelli last year. Hot, cool ,soft, extremely well done. It's got a fuzzy soft interior and nice pit and back venting. Well worth the expense at around $90.

What is your experience with this brand? I remember seeing them getting kicked off a reddit fmf AMA. So many ads, all these different clothing items, seems like too much to be sustainable. Its confusing how they can turn a profit with so many lines. I do have one of their seamless shirts from a soulcycle promo.

Not a lot - have a pair of shorts so get their emails. Given that my usual workout gear is free t-shirts I get at cycling events, my standard is pretty low. I'm in the market for more merino wool for traveling, so will give a try. The fact that they do not have % wool listed is concerning.
