Cino Heroica 2021 Ride Report

I finally got a little essay about this year's ride up on my blog: http://www.thebeautifulbicycle.com/2...-heroica-2021/

Great write up and super photos.

What a nice surprise to see some writing about the event that has become the highlight of my summer riding.

If you've never been to Montana I can't think of a better excuse to come for a visit....if you have ridden in Montana you know what you'll be missing if you don't make the trip.

See you next summer.

Mr. Kirk is right. It is a magical ride and worth the trouble of getting to Montana. I'm planning on going again. Great people, great roads, great food, great scenery.

Thinking about it for next year!

Hey, just read through. Great ride report bici! I enjoy this kind of thing and ride reports are my favorite threads to read here. Looks like you had a great time and the roads look phenomenal. I'd love to give the event a go one of these years.

Doable on 25's? I'm betting yes.

It depends on what your idea of "doable" is. A few years back I rode both days with a friend who was on 23's and he lived to tell the tale and didn't flat even once. So it was doable for him on skinny tires. I know I wouldn't choose to run it on 25's if I could go wider.

Both times I did Cino I did so on 30's and even still one needed to keep your eyes open for the odd big and sharp rock that would pinch flat them.

With all of the new wide tire gravel options many would get the impression that you can't ride on gravel unless you have 40+ mm tires and one look at the group of bikes that are used at the Cino will put that idea to bed in a hurry. Lots of old school narrow tubulars are used out there and the smiles on the riders faces speak volumes.

I can’t remember this rider’s name, but I think he was riding on 23s on narrow vintage Campy rims —IIRC he had something like five flats. I thought 32s at around 60psi were perfect—but I did get one pinch flat on a fast downhill. My partner running 30s didn’t flat.

That's a pretty cool bike right there.

Thanks so much for posting that write-up. Somehow I have to get myself and my ‘72 Bob Jackson out there! Are you permitted modern equipment on an old frameset? I definitely couldn't ride that on a 52-45 x 13-23, which is what I think is in the drawer of Nuovo Record bits for that bike.

Looks like a pretty glorious ride and a good group too! Thanks for posting.

There are no hard and fast rules about the equipment....vintage is strongly encouraged but it's understood that that isn't always possible. So you see a whole mix of machinery - everything from stock Singers to modern bikes....however most are riding something oldish. To have your bike designated "heroic" it needs to meet some criteria and this is simply for bragging rights.

Anything built of lugged steel is very much appreciated.

It's a really enjoyable event. The ride is real and it's not a vintage bike parade but that's what makes it so much fun and Heroic.

Yea that was Derek. Remember he also lost his brake fixing bolt? Had to zip-tie it to the frame and limp into Pranza. He learned a few lessons that day :-)

I've done it twice on Pasela 28s which measured 26mm on my rims. I had one flat and it was caused by a rim strap that shifted. I did switch to 30mm wide tires after those two years and there's no doubt they were smoother but the others worked fine.

You'd be good with that setup. You might get some good-natured ribbing but that would be the extent of it. Of course there are plenty of modern subcompact cranks that look the part, such as Velo Orange, SunXCD and IRD. Combine those with a vintage long cage RD and a different freewheel and you'd be set.
