Just got an email from Above Category where they list bikes that are in stock and ready for purchase. Some really nice lookers out here. Check it out. BTW, I am not affliliated with AC. I just admire the nice looking bikes they build. If you look closer, you'll see an "old" Baum MTB for just $4000.

For $21k, surely they could find a better place to take a photo. What's that, a parking garage?

Haha and we all know how unsafe detached garages are in SF from the other thread.

If you look closely, you will see "holes" in the walls.
On weekends, AC allows peasants to take a "peek" at these beauties for a nominal charge. ;)

Bikes like that remind me of the time I was waiting at my local uber high-end boutique bike shop to pay for some Assos gloves, and the guy in front of me at the register was taking possession of his brand new fully blinged-out top-of-the-line halo bike (I forget what brand...maybe Parlee or S-Works?) and moments after I noticed the number at the bottom of his invoice -- $15,000.00 -- I hear him ask the clerk "Oh yeah, and what should I do if it gets wet?"

Not saying I wouldn't jump at the chance to own one...

Quick estimate from on line pricing and the sum of its parts is "only" $17,7550 USD. extra $4k is for SF pricing?

Not sure what duty would be on an $8750 frame from Australia, that is were portion comes from.

The amount of money (for some) in the bay area is staggering.

This is not about the "Bay Area." The Bay Area is lousy with bike shops that cater to normal humans.

This is about AC. This is what they're about. They're not exactly trying to hide it, and their pricing has always been at this level relative to others. I think the only thing that's new here is that they're being a little more explicit about it. They do only custom builds and they charge full retail for every part. They typically spec the highest end components (Lightweight Wheels, CeramicSpeed bearings, Super Record groups, etc) and work with custom builders in the highest-end part of the market (Baum, Prova). It tells you something that the "cheap" bikes that they sell are from Mosaic and Pegoretti.

There is definitely a niche market for this, just like there is for high-end watches.

....

Maybe it's the "in stock" premium? That is hard to come by these days.....

Nomadmax 11-12-2021 10:53 AM

The ONLY way I'd pay 20K for a bike is when 20K is the equivalent of 5k in right now dollars. Thankfully, that day won't ever have to come because I have a fleet steel bikes and the associated spare parts.

That said, good for anybody who has the means and wants it.

This feels very Marin and not very Bay Area. Nice sleds to get plowed into by a Land Rover or G Wagon.
