Catch me up - why is 1st gen etap in demand?
 

Saw a thing in the classifieds about how original etap is getting expensive and hard to come by. What makes it special/preferred to the new stuff?

Cross-compatability with chainrings, cassettes, and freehubs I'm guessing is the #1 thing - plus wanting to keep an older group on the road after a single piece gets damaged..

I am certainly no etap expert but I would say 11 speed compatibility with a lot of wheels is a great reason.

Sram 12 uses new freehub and we go back to the 10 vs 11 speed upgrade era of old wheels you could not upgrade. Everyone hase a 11 speed wheelset with a cassette on it just slap etap and roll.

1.) It's 11sp and can work on alot of wheel sets without swapping FHB, brakes, cranksets.
2.) It's sorta not being made anymore, but kinda is so there is a shortage of parts floating around so the demand is up.
3.) It's wireless, so that's cool compared to di2
4.) It does work great and is a common upgrade from mechanical.

It's not so much that it's in high demand, as that it's in short supply.

How does something get in short supply without high demand?

Reduce or stop production.

It s really simple. None of the axs stuff will talk to the etap stuff, and the rds are fsilure prone and the fds have bs limit screws that suck smd snd and. If you have etsp and need parts your screwed.

saw a guy with a NIB full group for 1500 at a local swap meet. Don't have the cash but kinda regretting not getting it...

But is etap any more in demand than other kit?
 

I’ve seen shimano 105 hydro shifters sell for $4-500 lately so don’t see how etap is any different from the rest of the supply bottleneck in cycling groupset components.

But fair point to other posts above that cite the compatibility being a big upside to 11s vs 12s

Interesting. I'd offhandedly assumed that you could get 12s road cassettes with an 11t small ring that used the standard spline, but now that I'm looking around, I guess that's not true, (yet) is it...

As Protoast mentioned, Shimano Ultegra R8100 and DA 9200 will be partially resolving this problem, although who knows about actual delivery ETA's...
Sram does make a 12 speed cassette that work on standard 10/11 speed HG free hub bodies, but only in an 11-50 offering. They certainly could make an 11-34 that would work but I suppose they want people to buy into the XD standard.
Gararuk makes a similar cassette.

Rotor might be the main contender, as they offer an 11-36 that fits a standard HG free hub. It's actually got great gaps in my eyes too, as it's tight down low, with big jumps at the top end, like the "bailout" cassette. Probably a bit much for road riding, but for Allroad or Gravel...

I just know that IF I could afford a Red eTap setup for my coupled bike, I would love it. I could adapt it to the drivetrain I already have and it would speed up packing and unpacking that bike as well as allow remote button shifting.
