Real world differences in Ottrott variations?
 

I’ve been on the hunt for an Ottrott for a bit now. I’ve come across two candidates. One has titanium seat stays while the other has carbon seat stays and the ball bearing linkage. Assuming that fit is equal between the two, what are the differences in ride quality/comfort between the two designs?


I have bad ideas…

I've had both models. Serotta's idea was to provide a rear "suspension" keeping the wheel on the ground over uneven surfaces, not hopping up and down losing contact or traction. Actually worked pretty well, the bike feeling more secure and planted.

My all-time favorite Serotta was an Ottrott with that rear. I'd love to find another in my size.

The Ottrott was one of Serotta's best. Just keep in mind those little bearings can and do wear out and fail. Serotta made a special tool to remove and install them, not sure how common they are. I'm sure there are other ways to remove those bearings but the proper tool makes it easier.

Its not that hard without the tool. There's a thread here on how to hack it with the correct bolt/nuts as a press. But if they've been in there for a while, its going to need some soaking in a good penetrating oil as they tend to seize on the outer race. Coolplanetbikes (posts in the Classifieds and on ebay) has the bearings.
I can't compare an ST to a standard as I've only had the ST, but in a stable of 5 bikes that are all ready to go, its the go to. Just something about it-it does track very well, is stiff enough but not so stiff as to beat you up.
