Possibly. I think it was just a publicity stunt, and no money actually changed hands.

I could be wrong...but I thought the guy who ate it was a "performance artist" but not the guy who bought it? Otherwise, why were there "guards posted" and why were there charges "that were not pressed"?

I think they auction off the first melons of the season from a specific region and they typically run 20-30k.

The Japanese pay crazy amounts for the symmetry etc. The perfect shape, so to speak.
