gotta Garmin 1000 but thinking might be useful to try my phone to navigate using ridewithgps. your recs or not recs.

I ditched a computer if any kind about 6 years ago. I have moved twice to new states since then. I just ride and wander. It’s great.

Before I got a wahoo I just diy’d a cheap but secure phone case , garmin out front mount and quarter-turn chip for mounting my iPhone at the front of my handlebars. Worked really well.

Plenty of 3d printed phone cases on shapeways that have a garmin mount on the back. Not sure they are 100% secure for road and/or offroad riding.

I'm not sure if this would be "the best" but it's what I use to mount my phone for controlling Zwift.

The clamp has a good range of size adjustment and the head swivels around, so you can mount to the handlebar or stem. This allows me to keep the Garmin in the out-front position. Doesn't require anything particular w.r.t. the phone or case and will fit most smart phones.
I've only used it indoors on a trainer (not particularly concerned with looks, aero, vibrations, etc.) but one of my coworkers uses this mount on his motorcycle and it seems secure & durable enough. Word of caution- double-check the length of the screw on the back/underside of the mount head. Mine was slightly longer than necessary and I had to Dremel it a little shorter to prevent it from scratching the handlebar when clamped down.

I use this on my motorcycle to use my phone as gps. It seems to hold secure at all speeds.

Not the cheapest, but the Quadlock is a top shelf case and mount.

It's very secure. Been using it for years.

I've got a mount made by Topeak. It replaces the headset cap and includes a phone case. Not sure if they make one that fits your particular phone. They also make a nice external battery that mounts under the stem.

Are there any phones which are actually visible enough to see in the sunlight when you're wearing sunglasses and riding?

I tried an iPhone mount, it was near useless. Had to pull it over to make anything out.. The plastic shield that came with the mount to protect the screen made it even worse. It was too dangerous IMO.

Samsung to me = OLED screen. OLED = less brightness in daylight than my iPhone had but better black levels indoors.

I would take a good look at the phone in bright sun before spending any money. If you have to pull over because the visibility isn't good enough, you can just leave it in your pocket and pull it out when you stop to see where you're going. No different than a map back in the day.

The Garmin Trans-reflective screens and the eInk that Wahoo uses IIRC are orders of magnitude better outside than any smartphone screen I've seen.

Quad lock also ... got mine through Amazon. Put in the phone model.

Easy to install, secure, easy to take off. Not cheap.

With Samsung S8, screen is easy to read. I use it with Ride With GPS app that tracks my route and will give turn by turn if you preload a route. That said, 90% of time I ride with the screen turned off except when I touch the screen to turn it on. That's an option in rwgps. Power use with screen off but tracking the route and allowing it to be saved after is maybe 10-20% for a two to three hour ride. You can set an option to leave the screen on but that will eat at least 50% of power in 2 to 3 hours.

When I get home, give the ride a name, click save, and it's in my log on rwgps before I can walk up a flight of stairs.
