Parting with a frame that you really love...
 

Has anyone on the Forum parted way with a frame they really loved (or thought was really unique) that they didn't sell because of fiscal necessity?

In other words, a frame that was redundant, and probably not going to be ridden much?

Yes. It's just a thing. Sell it and move on to new experienced. Marie Kondo the hell out of it.

Trying to get to that mental space. Spending an excessive amount of time on the "Custom Bike" section sure doesn't help. PS Didn't know who Marie Kondo was...

She's the lady that thinks you should get rid of just about everything you own. I sold a mint Serotta Atlanta in classic red to yellow fade for virtually nothing. And threw in a never worn Serotta jersey. Dumb. Really, really dumb to let that go for so little.

after the stinner fell in my lap i sold my crux as a complete and took the money and bought three leather jackets. you can only ride one bike at a time. but i guess you can also only wear one jacket at a time too? hoarding gets you nowhere.

Yup, my Davidson Ti is hanging on a rack. I won't sell it as I'd get peanuts for it.

Parting with as in selling for a reasonable amount or donating?

I love my Landshark, but could maybe get $50 - $100 if I was lucky (already tried & went as low as $150 before pulling it). Now it's wall art.

No, I have a bike that (I assume) would fetch a good return. All flat mount disc and some really unique features. I don't know about Marie Kondo, but I kind of feel I went "over the brink" a bit, and lost sight of the more important things in my life.

I think I must be an example of the opposite. I really love the Bob Jackson I had custom made in 1972, but it's too big for me (57.2 cm TT, properly fit I ride +/- 54 TT). So I had another custom made that fits me better, my Anderson, in 2012. I don't want to part with the BJ even though it's kinda redundant, because I have so many miles on it, and it is a beautiful object. So I keep it built up and ride it from time to time, which is preferable to me than hanging the frame/fork on the wall. At the moment it's out for its third repaint in 47 years. When it comes back, I'm gonna have to decide whether to build it back up as the 3x10 STI "modern" version, or pull the Campy Nuovo Record stuff out of the drawer and build it up Eroica style - which I know will be less satisfying to ride, but nicer to look at :)

The thing about a Landshark like yours, it really IS wall art - as in, a non-biker would notice and remark on it being cool. I think that's the exception rather than the rule.

I am thinking about letting go on my Tommasini which I love. Shaped Genius tubes and horrible fading Italian paint. I have 4 steel frames that are too similar and I may jump on that bandwagon I hear about- disc and the electronic shifty thing.

I tried to watch Mario Kondo for maybe 5 minutes. I had not heard the phrase, "Marie Kondo the hell out of it" but that needs to happen in my closet.

I have a couple of bikes that I frequently think about selling. I always back out on that idea because they would not sell for much. They are not classics or high level that would attract afficiennados. I ride them and keep them clean and lubed. Other than that, I probably will never have to put more money into them.

I have a Klein that I'm afraid I'll never be able to sell because we have had too many great miles together. But sometimes I feel like it should be retired because surely a 1" carbon fork with a carbon steerer and carbon dropouts has a finite life.

Just out of curiosity … you have two custom frames that were built for you by builders whom you've fostered a good relationship with. You would have no problem letting one of them go for reasons other than economic necessity? In other words, you wouldn't let any emotional connection impact your thinking?
