OT: do you have and enhanced ID?

Just learned my current NJ drivers license is not an “enhanced” ID. This will require me to go to the MVC to get one even though my current license does not expire for years. Apparently Oct 2020 these will be req’d to board all domestic flights

I predict widespread airport chaos.

Colorado changed their drivers licenses several years ago, so I have a star in the corner of mine.

Ergh. I got it. Do not like the addtl big brotherness of this esp the mandate that comes with it (do this or require passport for all flights inc domestic :mad:)

Sigh.. so just bit the bullet. Yay for spending half day at the DMV.

PA is the same. They call it "Real ID"

It is good for 4 years I believe. Get a Passport and Passport book. It is good for 10 years and it is acceptable for all domestic flights. This way if you want to travel abroad, you're covered either way.

You can also use a passport instead even on domestic and foreign flights.

MA gave us the option for a regular one or the REAL ID... for the same price and a bit more pain in the a and time, I just went ahead and upgraded to the REAL. We are required by 2020 to have the REAL-ID, MA res at least.

A passport seems like a better idea, aside from the initial cost difference.

I don't like the mandate and agree chaos might ensue. I also am not sure these new IDs are totally accessible to even the average US citizen. But I digress

I just got my California Real ID in the mail yesterday. The process to get it was a real pain. I stood in line at the DMV for about 4 hours 2 months ago to give them all of the paperwork they required and answer a few questions. The ID was supposed to be mailed in 2 weeks. Since it hadn't arrived 6 weeks later I called DMV to find out why (45 minutes to get someone on the phone). They forgot to check a box in their system that I didn't need to take the written test so the status was on 'hold'. I had to go back to DMV and stand in line again so I could have someone check the box :mad:

Anyway, I have it now and can be considered a law abiding citizen once again.

No grumbling allowed. Remember it was NJ that fought the new system in the first place and delayed it so many damn years. I remember because my wife and I showed up to renew in Springfield a few years and were told we did not need "all of that paperwork" even though the posters in the DMV promoting it were still hanging on the walls.

We just plan to use our passports until we need to renew our licenses. I am not giving any state more money than I absolutely must before I have too.

Passports are easier to get, and there is the option for
a passport card. The card is accepted by the TSA for domestic flights,
but not international.

Me, I just show my old KGB id, from the good old days.

Just renewed in MA and forewent the RealID license. I have a passport card and I almost never fly.

In RI AAA members can get it done there instead of the dreaded DMV.

My permanent residence is on MI, a border state. I have had ‘enhanced id’ forever. It costs more, and I keep it in a rfid blocking sleeve.

I have no idea if it will work for trips to Canada or Mexico much longer.

What a world.

Missouri took years to figure their compliance out, I always had to carry a passport to fly the last couple of years I lived there.

Pro tip for next time, you can make a DMV appointment online ahead of time and walk right in.

I have Real ID, a Passport and Global Entry. I'm good for the long haul. Highly recommend it if you travel a bit.
