Campagnolo Chorus 12s on allroad/road+ bike with wider than 32 tires?

Hello,

Reading through the Campy technical docs, I see that the Chorus 12s front derailleur is built to support up to 32mm tires... "Design of the 2x12 speed front derailleur and its trajectory angle mean wide tires measuring up to 32 mm can be used".

I've seen builds where it's quite a bit wider on frames built with 400-440 chainstay. Is anyone here riding a allroad bike with a Campagnolo FD and wider tires?

I've seen one build, the Above Category Open U.P.P.E.R., with a Mechanical Super Record groupset and running the Compass Switchback Hill 650bx48mm tires.

With my current 32mm tires, I’ve got ~12mm clearance between the tire and derailleur at the nearest point.

I am thinking the STA is going to be the variable on playing nice or not.

STA + chainstay length

Makes sense. I'm trying to see if I can find technical information on the Campagnolo website to answer my question... The Open has a 72.5 deg STA, and a 420mm chainstay length.

This is the build I was referencing earlier. Elevated Open UPPER

Which is running 650bx48 tires. I guess another question is whether there is a design difference between the Super Record and the Chorus 12s FD.

How much different is the 12 speed FD than an 11 speed? The chain is narrower but what else?

FWIW, I’m running a chorus 11 derailed with 38’s. No prob what so ever.

There is not Except for the cage, materials mostly, the 12s front ders(SR/Record/Chorus) are identical.

So, altho Campag says it's optimized for a tire up to 32mm, with the proper frame, it can 'handle' tires much larger.

In other words, considering the huge variability of frame design, it just depends.

no problem

Running Record 10-speed with 650B/42 and works fine. Centaur triple 30/39/52 in front.

I sell the current chorus 12 speed groups and I install them on the Basso Palta frames I also sell. I routinely set these bikes up with 38-45c tires with no issues from the group.
