Snow
 

There are up to 5 inches of snow forecasted for NYC through the day tomorrow. I am considering picking up a pair of 32mm tires for my road bike (disc brakes, plenty of clearance) and doing a ride along 9w.

Any suggestions/tips/words of wisdom? Mainly around traction/handling, not what to wear.

Yesterday night

I run some Clement PDX's for ice, snow, etc. Their tread is very good at shedding mud as well as snow. I like low pressure for lots of tread flattening/contact because you never know where ice could be lurking..

Stay warm, relaxed, and by George don't make any quick twitchy movements! Smooth and quiet riding will keep you upright and cruising :fight:

+1, though I would say if you do hit ice the right way, often the only things that can make a difference are studded tires.

Besides worrying about tires and traction for your bike you should be concerned about tires and traction of the cars on that highway. Is there a safe way to ride a bike there that I don't know about?

Your probably right Ken. Especially if snow is falling and roads are covered its easy to become cager bait.

I find it really hard to look behind while crushing through ice and snow, so maybe a mirror to keep an eye on the lane next to you? I don't have one but it sure would have been helpful this past week commuting in MN.

If the shoulder is full of slush and snow pack, I take the full lane and bypass any terrain that could cause me to bail and get run over. Its very situational, but i'm pretty sure its saved me once or twice. Sometimes the shoulder is a **** show!

If the weather is bad the PA might close the access to the GWB.
I would check the PA Alerts before you leave.
You'll probably break your neck climbing the icy metal stairs before you get hit by a car.

It is freezing today... my skin got thin being out of the city the last 17 years.. I cannot imagine riding tomorrow.

time to ride in circles in the park.

We're in the midst of a pretty heavy snowstorm as I write this (Richmond VA area), it's a (pretty) mess out there. Thus I did my 20 mile afternoon ride early this morning instead. :)

Can’t wait to race tomorrow in that storm. We haven’t had enough sloppy days this cx season.

Ridding in the snow on a bike not designed for the snow sounds fun on paper, and it is for the first 20-30 minutes, then its just unbearable.

I tried to ride to work last year, during one of the storms. Was not fun after a couple of blocks, so I turned around, went home and took the subway.
