confused about campy triple...

After reading lots of great posts, I think I am going for a triple on my frame.

The price is $400 difference between the ultegra (around $800) and the 7800 dura ace group (around $1200) new.

But I can't determine which campy is comparable or what the pricing is.

Can you please tell me?
And any recommendations between the above?

Thanks for all the great advise.

David

If you go stricly from top to bottom you could say that dura ace is record and chorus is ultegra level. Campy ppl will tell you that centaur is more comparable to ultegra level than chorus and if you go buy cost it is.

If you got a good frame and want a good group but do not need the absolut best i would say ultegra or centaur will be good choices. If you want to treat yourself get the chorus group. Think you will be pleased with either choice.

Personally i like the hidden cables on campy alot. Performance wise im not sure i can say either is better.

Good price for a centaur (carbon, theres an alloy version too thats cheaper) group is about 750 and chorus is about 350 extra but it buys you another gear. Campy chorus and record have 11 gears from 2009.

Campy has almost abandoned triple in favor of compact gearing. They still do produce a triple system, I think, but don't know what the name is. I think it is approximately Centaur level, although not by that name.

If you're OK with used equipment, I can highly recommend a Record or Chorus triple. I have one on a bike I ride frequently and it rocks. Watch eBay... although they are a bit in demand.

For 2009, the offerings have been reduced to the absolute minimum - one front derailleur, one crank and one BB, all basically Centaur/Ultegra level.

FWIW, the 2009 Centaur shift levers are mechanically identical to Record/Chorus, other than being 10 speed. You can choose between carbon brake levers or cheaper aluminum levers.

Any medium or long cage RD will operate a triple. The long cage is only needed with a 13-29 cassette. According to the Campy website, they no longer make a long cage RD. If that's the case, anyone needing a long cage better jump on one before they disappear. E-bay might be the best source for NOS Campy triple parts.

I rode Campy triple's for years, but never used a Campy crank. A few years ago, FSA carbon triple cranks with ISIS BBs were dirt cheap and worked fine with the rest being Campy.

Prices are currently lowest at online sites in the UK, like Ribble, Shiny Bikes, Probike kit and total cycling.

To create a Campy 10 triple drivetrain, all you need from Campy are the shifters, medium cage RD, triple FD, cassette and chain. You can actually make a triple crank 11 speed drivetrain, with a 12-27 cassette, if desired.

Maybe not the cheapest route...but:

Buy the above and then buy 10spd levers separately. There's your Campy triple grouppo!

The only issue with the Campy Comp Triple crank is that it only comes in 170 and 175. No 172.5.

Dave,

Do you know if <2009 RD jockey wheel cages are compatible with 2009 RDs?

If they are, then one could construct a long cage 11spd RD by swapping in the long cage parts from a pre-2009 RD.

I don't have any sound info regarding the cage compatibility, but the 11 speed RDs do have new 11T jockey wheels. IIRC, there is a thickness issue with the long cage that makes it unique and not transferable to other RDs.

If I was going to make an 11 speed triple, I'd make my small modification to the cable clamp bolt on a 10 speed RD to increase the travel and make it compatible with the 11 speed shifter. I've already ran a medium cage 10 speed RD on an 11 speed train.

Roughly pre-ultratorque Centaur.

Weights are listed at:

Look at the 2008 Triple pdf.

FWIW, I have two bikes that sport triple cranks, 13/29 cassetes, and medium cage RD's. They work just fine - I've never needed the long cage RD.

when you look on ebay, how can you tell the age? for example, which campy record, etc?

open to all ideas.

thanks,

Here we go again. It may work on some bikes, but not all, depending on the chainstay length and the exact crank setup. With a 53/39/28, I needed a long cage, but the 28 inrease the wrap by 2T.

yep

you can use whichever levers you want. the 3 pieces are of good quality but not as nice looking as the old chorus/record.....

I have them on my touring bike. PETE

Is the 2006 campy record triple crank a good start?

Any negatives to this one?

thanks
