For sale: $650 cash to local Portland area humans.

Vintage custom lugged steel tandem project.

Mid to late 1970’s era. Unknown custom frame builder.
Has a bicycle license sticker that expired in 1981 from Middleton... near Madison so could be a Wisconsin builder?

Captain’s seat tube measured center of eccentric BB shell up to top of seat collar = 63cm.
Captain’s top tube measured center to center = 55.5cm.

Stoker’s seat tube center of BB to top of collar = 59cm.
Stokers’s top tube also 55.5cm.

Rear dropout spacing = 126mm.

700c wheelset, Phil Wood quick release sealed cartridge bearing hubs laced to Mavic hard anodized 40 hole rims. 5 speed freewheel. Schwalbe tires hold air.

Stronglite 1” headset, Simplex friction down tube shifters, and Mafac rear cantilever brakes for that French connection.

Sugino 170mm cranksets & Phil Wood sealed cartridge bearing bottom brackets front & rear. 56 tooth big ring.

Shimano cantilevers on the fork. Cinelli threaded stem. Suntour brake levers & rear derailleur.

I purchased the tandem 7 or 8 years ago from a younger-ish fellow who had gotten it from his father who had purchased it from the original owner. The original owner was supposedly a famous retired NFL player who had turned to cycling after football. Name unknown.
Frame builder also unknown.
The 2nd owner had more traditional cantilever brake bosses brazed on to the frame & fork (likely 1990’s era by the Shimano brakes & Onza “Chill Pill” straddle cable carrier) & also had the seat tubes reamed to a more popular 27.2mm size... this according to his son, whom I purchased everything from here in Portland. I meant to reassemble it back into a complete bicycle, but in the 7+ years of ownership I have done absolutely nothing with it. It is exactly how I purchased it. It’s just too large for my stoker unfortunately.

The metallic maroon paint has just a hint of fuchsia glinting in it when in direct sunlight. It looks presentable & polished up pretty well. Still has plenty of nicks & small scratches. The paint around the cantilever bosses still needs work... someone had started w/ red(?!?) touch up paint on one of the rears.

Simple, but functional lug work. Interesting classic rear brake cable routing pierces the captain’s seat tube. Pump peg. 2 sets of bottle cage bosses.

Could build up to be a very lightweight fast tandem again.

Check out the “Guaranteed NOT built with REYNOLDS 531...” decal. If I could figure out how to lift that off & preserve it... wow. Sure wonder the story on that.

If you’re interested or have any additional questions I did not already answer, please reply to this post. Please remember to include your telephone number & preferred time to receive a call. The only way I’ll contact you is via a local area telephone number. If you have an out of area number, please just give a brief explanation. Lately I’ve been getting spammed by a lot of non local numbers. Thanks for understanding.

Tony Mezzatesta used to use “NBI” tubeset stickers. “NBI” stood for “Nothing But Initials.”

My recollection is the Not Built stickers were commissioned by Turin Bike Shop in the early 1970s and Reynolds shut them down. Sheldon Brown gave me one for the bike I built for my undergrad thesis at MIT in 1974.

Fausto Coppi 60cm €400

From Facebook:

https://scontent-lga3-2.xx.fbcdn.net...84&oe=6001020A

https://www.facebook.com/commerce/li...are_attachment

It's fun to read it in Flemish:

Fausto Coppi in goede staat. 60cc. Campagnolo Athena derailleurs, crankstel, shifters en remmen. Velgen lopen mooi rond. Laatste 2 kroontjes groot genoeg om een bergje op te raken. Chroom mooi. Pedalen Shimano en zadelpen BB. Stronglite kopgroep. Mooie rijklare fiets. Ik weet het de voorband ligt omgekeerd.

I think that is the stolen Spectrum shwon a few months ago in another thread.
Anyone remember that? The frame geometry is very close and appears to be paint chip showing.

Just check before buying. Long shot but just thought I'd mention.

Updated: here was thread: https://forums.thepaceline.net/showt...pectrum&page=8

PM'd the poster.
