A little hard to see here, but at :25 there were three horses ran along with our group.

It wasn't quite 50s f when I left home this morning to meet up with some friends, one of which was doing his first road ride. I typically ride solo but this was a nice change of pace for me. It was nice to hear Hynek talk about how much he was enjoying himself. I think we have a new one among our ranks!

Yes, I think the driver opening the door into me was more surprised than I was. He sorta shrieked. It was a good thing for Hynek to see as his experience on a bike has been mostly on mtb trails.

Latest one taken this past weekend with me trying out bikepacking for the first time on the Surly Trucker carrying almost 80 Ibs worth of camping gear.

The only thing I can say is....the trucker RULES!...even though the total weight is astronomical.

165 (man) + 30 (trucker) + 80 (gear) = 275 Ibs !!!

80 pounds ??? For a weekend outing?

Weisan, many folks cross the entire country with far less than that. I'm no expert, but I think you need to put your gear on a serious diet.

Louis pal, this is more like a "test" to see where the limits are, certainly an overkill for one night stay.

Louis 04-29-2015 11:38 PM

You making plans for some serious touring?

Yes, one-pal! It was really quite fun on that downhill stretch especially on the trucker...I mean, that thing is so stable especially when it's all loaded up with gear, I just let it ripped, no braking, nuthin', it's actually quite an eye-opener to compare a bike that is built specifically for loaded touring to my regular road bikes. Different tools and used correctly, they each fulfilled their intended purpose very well.

I have no qualms about bringing the trucker on an extended 80daysroundtheworld trip, it's built really really tough, kudos to the folks at Surly.

Here's a closer look at my setup.

Wei-pal, the guy who road around the world didn't have 80 lbs of gear! Did you bring a Coleman stove and a 6 person tent?

So, Niles favorite road is chip-seal? Crazy!

Looks like fun and one of the best parts of our State. It looks like some trees are starting to grow back from the devestating wildfires of a few years ago. Yes?

weisan 05-01-2015 04:33 PM

Tire-pal, don't worry, I know what I am doing, this is a "test", I added stones cut out of the grand canyon, just want to see what it feels or rides like with an over loaded bike going through the different terrain, road and weather conditions. You never know, one day I may have to haul my catch of the day all the way back to basecamp.

I think what Niles appreciate about Siloh is riding through farmlands, not so much the chip seal.

No, none of the trees are growing back, they have to replant them.

Our mornings are still on the cool side with temps in the mid 40s. That doesn't stop me from heading out in my normal summer gear as I warm pretty quickly once I get moving.
